Young Sounds Closes the Curtain on 2016-2017 Season

On Tuesday June 6th, Young Sounds of Arizona will close the curtain on our ambitious 2016 – 2017 season. The season included eight performances, all of which were between March and June of 2017, except for the first, in December. With each performance, the students’ intonation improved and their timing grew became more solid. Our students learned to work within their ensembles and to play within the entire group as well.

This May, Young Sounds was fortunate to have renowned tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi join us for our Guest Artist Program! Mr. Bergonzi’s career has spanned more than four decades. He studied at Lowell University, toured the world with The Dave Brubeck Quartet and actively records, performs and teaches master classes. In addition, he has been teaching improvisation to instrumentalists and vocalists at the New England Conservatory of Music since 1995. Our students were thrilled to have the opportunity to work with him!

Phoenix, AZ (April 13): Young Sounds of Arizona is pleased to announce that renowned tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi will be joining our ensembles on Monday May 8th at the Kerr Cultural Center in Scottsdale for a free performance that is open to the public. “Jerry Bergonzi is a fantastic saxophonist and truly understands jazz at its core. We are thrilled that he will be working with our students and performing with them as well. This is such a unique opportunity for Young Sounds members”, said Director Andrew Gross.

On Wednesday March 8th, Young Sounds of Arizona and the Mesa Community College Jazz band will team up to offer a lively evening of jazz at MCC’s Performing Arts Center. This performance offers Young Sounds (YS) members a chance to both broaden their performance experience and reach new audiences. Additionally, it is a great opportunity for YS members to meet MCC music department faculty as well as music majors.

Instead of learning only from textbooks, musicians bring instruments and an oscilloscope into classrooms to demonstrate those concepts via measurements of pitch and vibration.

Phoenix-born drummer Lewis Nash has been named the Bob and Gretchen Ravenscroft Professor of Practice in Jazz at Arizona State University. He will join the faculty of the ASU School of Music in January.
